Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of camping is this?

A: Dry camping, which means no power, no running water, no wifi, no showers. Porta-potties are available onsite, including one ADA compliant one.

Q: What if I need hookups

A: There are many RV parks and developed campgrounds throughout the Albuquerque Metro area, but be forewarned, they fill up quite a ways in advance for balloon fiesta week. Reserve ahead if this is your plan.

Q: Why can’t I bring a generator?

A: Because it’s rude to make your fellow campers listen to it.

Q: What if I want to just come for the day?

A: There is a $5 charge per person, per day. This is to help us cover the cost of the porta-potties (which you will likely be using) and to raise money for the Alameda Little League. This is a fundraiser. For children. Don’t be a jerk.

Q: I don’t have a VW but I want to camp with my friends who do. Can I tent camp with them?

A: Yes, but the same fees apply regardless of if you’re in a VW or a tent. Again, this is a fundraiser.

Q: Can I bring my RV?

A: We have VERY LIMITED parking for RV’s but have some rules you will need to adhere to. See here for more info.

Also, there is an RV park right next door. They usually fill up months in advance. If this is your plan, I recommend to reserve your spot with them NOW.

Q: Are Vanagons and Eurovans allowed?

A: Yes, all models and years of VW’s are allowed, regardless of cooling system.

Q: But why do you have to have a bus to camp? Aren’t you being an elitist?

A: Again, any model / year of VW is allowed. We stated this many times last year and we still got pushback from people…

Q: Can I tow my bus and leave my truck and trailer somewhere?

A: Yes, but we’re going to ask you to park your truck & trailer in a designated area.

Q: Is the balloon fiesta park within walking distance?

A: Yes, its about a 20 minute walk down a really nice mixed-use pathway. I would recommend to bring your bike. There is free bike valet parking at the Balloon Fiesta Park.

Q: Do I need to purchase tickets in advance?

A: No, you can pay at the gate when you arrive.

Q: I have a VW and a tent, do I have to pay for two spots?

A: No, as long as your tent is a reasonable size. If its larger than the Taj Mahal, we might need to talk.

Q: Do I need a passport to visit New Mexico?

A: No. New Mexico is the 47th state of the United States of America since January 6th, 1912. (we seriously get asked this question…)

Q: When can we show up? When do we have to leave?

A: We will be setting up for the event on Wednesday and have to be gone from the space by Sunday evening. You can camp with us starting Wednesday, but we might put you to work helping set up.

Q: Are dogs allowed?

A: Yes, but they must be on a leash and under your control at all times. You must pick up after them. There are rocks / thorns in the camping area and booties for their feet are recommended. Also, balloon fiesta puts on a fireworks display so if your dogs are noise sensitive, be forewarned.

  1. Hi, I live in central TX and have a ’59 bus. I would love to come to your campout! I will be trying to get some of my bus friends here to drive out too. And, I would like to know if you have any ways to hook up folks so they can drive out together?
    Thanks, Greg

    1. Hello,

There are quite a few people we know that come out from Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. The best bet is to post on our social media pages on Instagram or Facebook and get together that way.

  2. Are reservations taken or is it first come basis. I will be coming from out of state and would hate to have to turn around and go home if you ran out of room.

    1. The parking area will be roped off and you’ll be directed to park there. It is adjacent to the campsite. You will be allowed to unload in the camp area and then go park your truck / trailer. There are no reservations required.

    1. Yes, as long as you pick up after them and keep them on a leash under your control. Also, there are fireworks at balloon fiesta nearby, so if they’re sensitive to loud noises best to make other arrangements.

  3. Hi, this looks like a great event! We have a van, not VW. Do you know of a place to park overnight without self-contained van? Or would you allow us to park in your lot ? 3 people and a pup.

    1. Hello Jennifer,

Anything within view of the balloon fiesta is likely to have been booked up months in advance. You can try here: https://www.townofbernalillo.org/departments/coronado_campground/index.php

      Or here: http://www.isleta.com/lakesrvpark/rv-park.aspx

There’s also a KOA in bernalillo, or a decent amount of BLM land on the northwest side of town.

As for our event, you’re more than welcome to come spectate, but unfortunately it’s VW only as per our contract with our venue.
